about

Matthews: "Did you know there are more atoms than thoughts?
Er..
"and if you think about it, you're helping, aren't you?"
what?
"I have been asked if it's a true story. Well, it's a true lyric, isn't that enough?"
Is that you on the cover?
"It is me, yes. A younger me"
Is that your Raleigh Grifter?
"Why? It's not yours, is it?"

It's an unusual track in that it's an album as well. Could you explain?
"That was probably my fault. It was winter and I had no roof left to speak of so recorded the vocals on the bed under several bedsheets, duvets and an old Parka. Basically, I passed out then went into a coma, with the multitrack still running until the 50p in the electric ran out. When I came around in hospital a year later the track had mysteriously been released. I spoke to my contact at the pressing plant, the ever-paranoid Paul Metcalfe (hi Paul) who told me I had brought it in myself, in pyjamas and carrying what had looked to him like a taxi meter. He noticed the 55 minute recording was silent after the first four minutes but didn't want to 'raise a fuss' as I was pale blue and kept making the light bulbs flicker. So, on reflection it was his fault, in fact... (pause) ...bastard."
What about the title?
"Paul's idea, I guess."
And the Conscious Pilots?
"They're everywhere you go, aren't they."
How do you mean?
"Well, Ok, when you're flying they are. At least, they're meant to be. (laughter) (long pause) Hmm."

Ah! Records Nasty, UK

Ah! Records is officially the least successful record label of all time. Plagued for 30 years by bad luck, criminality, drug- induced recklessness and vandalism, only founders Bill Easton & Andy Matthews' belief in the merits of these releases have ensured Ah!'s continuity. Currently a toilet on a houseboat in Portugal, the office of Ah! introduces these gems to a new generation via bandcamp. x ... more
