1995. The artist's name was really Neal, Neal De Sprandim.
But Mad Matt was what he wrote on the publishing contract, and he'd drunk all the tipp-ex, so Mad Matt was what we were left with. Life is what we're left with. And white lips, if you're Neal. He 'designed' the cover himself, completely ignoring the much-worked-upon and hitherto-protected Ah! style and trashing not only my nylon guitar but the local Police Supertintendant's outdoor Jacuzzi in the process.
He claimed to have been born in Texas but anyone who heard him on the toilet could tell he was somewhere around Yeovil.
