recorded in 1985
"I couldn´t believe it when I got a postcard from a Wham! Fanzine asking me for an interview. I realised this could provide the shot in the arm the label desparately required, so I said yes, went to the return address and did it. I had stayed up all night writing and recording ´Bubo´ as a kind of designer track to be included with the issue with my interview in.“ In retrospect, Matthews conceded that a gothic Peter-Gabriel inspired performance may not have been most in keeping with the Wham! Style of pop. „I have gone my way and they, I presume, have gone theirs.“ he says. „It serves me right not to try and second-guess what Andrew Ridgeley was thinking.“ 679 lockdown was chosen as a name as it was the number of Matthews´bicycle lock. „It was a good way to remember it.“ he said in the same interview. The bike was stolen by Melvin Vetiver, who ran the magazine from home next door to Matthews.
"Bubo" was free to subscribers of the Fanzine as a 200mm flexi. All copies folded in post, made unplayable and disposed of by recipients.
Master tape used as Christmas decoration by Matthews parents - burnt in January domestic bonfire with tree.

lyrics

BUBO

Bubo won't go
Bubo is slow
Bubo won't think
Bubo is stink
Bubo won't repair the tube-oh
patched up a nuclear U-boat
but can't take the cancer from a boob-oh

I can't start work 'cause the train won't go
The train won't go 'cause of guts in the wheels
the guts won't go 'cause the body is dead
the soul left because it hated work - tsk!
the soul left because it hated work

bubo's too big, greedy fat pig
old and new, dirty and clean
the fat is rancid, and the flesh is green

I won't go to work, told the boss he was sick
I won't go to church 'cause I've lost my belief
Bubo your friends are letting you down
Bubo is losing his sleep
yes, Bubo's a disease of a clown

Bubo is killing us all
you know, you wrote it on the wall
Pluto eats Mickey Mouse
Cleudo set in a nut-house

The train will go 'cause the Boss don't care
the unions say no 'cause their man got scared
the boss says "no rice, son, if you don't work late."
The queen is dead and we all feel alone
welcome to your new home

Plagued for 30 years by bad luck, criminality, drug- induced recklessness and vandalism, only founders Bill Easton & Andy Matthews' belief in the merits of these releases have ensured Ah!'s continuity. Currently a toilet on a houseboat in Portugal, the office of Ah! introduces these gems to a new generation via bandcamp. x ... more
