punch!

about

in 2000 I recorded "mr. matthews", a breakthrough LP for me (unreleased). Not in technological terms (it was the last album I recorded on cassette 4-track - from then it went onto 12 rack Digital Audio Workstation - you can tell these recordings by the rythmic grind of the hard drive during the quiet mic'd up bits) but in terms of candour. Mr Matthews was my therapy album. There I was - Post-millenial crisis, end of not-too-long but powerful (for me at least) relationship, general feelings of malaise and pointlessness. But, as so often in these situations, a valuable opportunity for self-examination.
And what a sordid bit of post-NeuWave this is - truly gnarly distorted drum track, a vocal style I'll not explore again (Jello meets iggy?!) and an off-kilter drum/octaved bass/guitar relationship of which I am still quite fond. My dad sometimes felt violence was his only option - when I saw how diminished his agency was, I came to feel pity for him. I have small bony fists anyway. Teaching ukulele has reminded me I have achieved things with them and stringed instruments that most find "impossible".
'Punch!' It's a hit!
I tagged the next track on for value and to make it part of my "Get yourself Free - Ah!" cover versions programme. bless you all.

lyrics

why do you get bigger when you hit me?
why do you shrink when i strike you
what? who? when was the trigger for the terror?
Of anticipation worse than the actual
Punch!

why the fist and fury,
not the force of the thigh and foot?
Cannot these hands caress, shake embrace?
Not this time.
In the next flat through paper-thin walls
we hear them fighting.

Punch!

Ah! Records Nasty, UK

Ah! Records is officially the least successful record label of all time. Plagued for 30 years by bad luck, criminality, drug- induced recklessness and vandalism, only founders Bill Easton & Andy Matthews' belief in the merits of these releases have ensured Ah!'s continuity. Currently a toilet on a houseboat in Portugal, the office of Ah! introduces these gems to a new generation via bandcamp. x ... more
