the golden age

about

HellRon was in fact just one person, Ronald Hedgrow, from Grantham. He threw stones at my window one night, stumbling drunk, shouted up he'd "written a blinder and you're the man for the job of.." (rest of slur inaudible due to Ron treading on a rake in a supremely guileless way I had previously thought couldn't happen in real life). After a few weeks, when his nose had set and he could see out of his right eye again, we set up the session, I played on guitar, couple of girls from the local Prep school on celesta and some gnarly old casio which had a 6 parameter synth on top we also used as the basis of 6-79's 'Bubo' (see ahrecords.bandcamp.com/track/bubo), Ron trucked up with a safeway's bag of grapes and what appeared to be dead lizards, and off we went. I quickly realised something was up, when he refused to take off his walkman headphones to wear studio cans. we compromised with a one-on-one-ear, one-on-the-other set-up. Ron had brought no notes, said he needed to hear 'his demo' to get the lyric right. I suggested we put the tape in the studio deck so we could all learn. There was an infantile tussle, but I won. The tape was 'sea change' by Beck, and this song was by him. After an uncomfortable silence, i reasoned the studio time was booked and paid for, let's go for it, see how far we get.
We got as far as registering the recording with MCPS - a week later I awoke to hear a hail of driveway gravel being flung at my window. Look out, i swear to god there's Tom Cruise and a guy in raybans and a suit carrying an attaché case...

Currently a toilet on a houseboat in Portugal, the office of Ah! introduces these gems to a new generation via bandcamp. x ... more
